Working with the WebGIS Controls
There are several types of controls
that are used in the WebGIS. Each of these controls performs a different
function and is located in a different area of your web browser. The controls
are grouped together by function; Buttons are used for 'one-click' commands and Tools
are used for interacting with the current map. Both of these types
of controls is explained in more detail below.
|
Using the Buttons
Buttons are 'one-click' commands
that immediately send the user's request to the map for processing.
The WebGIS buttons are normally outlined in gray but will acquire a red border when the user moves their mouse over the button. Clicking
on the button sends that command to the map. Try the example
below - move your mouse between the two buttons and try clicking on them:

Using the Buttons Example

Below is a description of the function each button performs:
Zoom In
- Increases the scale of the map in the Map Window by a fixed amount.
The new map will have more detail but will not cover as much area as the
previous view.
Zoom Out
- The reverse of the above. The scale of the new map decreases by a fixed
amount, has less detail and covers more area than the previous view.
Zoom to Extent
- Resets the scale of the map to encompass all of Town of Kittery and some surrounding towns.
Zoom Previous
- Resets the scale of the map before the last change in scale.
Clear Selected
Parcel - If you have selected a parcel or parcels using the 'Query'
tools, this tool will clear the selection from the map. Note that this tool
clears everything, selected parcels and abutters, all at once. Use the
'Clear Abutters' button on the Info Window to clear just the Abutters of a selected
parcel.
Toggle Highlighting
- Typically, parcels which are selected are surrounded by a red border
and highlighted using a light red. However, sometimes this
highlighting obscures geographic features in the parcel. Use this button
to toggle the light red highlighting on and off for the selected parcel.
Note the red border of the selected parcels is always maintained (until
it is cleared).

Using the Tools
Tools
are bit more complicated than using a button. You begin by
setting the tool 'Active' by single-clicking on it. This will highlight
the tool with a red border that, unlike buttons, does not go away
if you move the mouse off of the tool. Try the example below - move
your mouse between the two buttons and then clicking on one of them. You
will notice the tool stays highlighted, even if you move your mouse
the other button. Clicking on the other button will mark that tool active
and reset the previous tool.
After activating a tool, you will need to interact with the Map Window
to complete your request. This will entail either clicking on the map
(the 'Identity' tool), or by first clicking and then dragging the mouse across
the map (the 'Zoom In', 'Measure Distance', and 'Pan' tools). Below is a description
of the function each Tool performs:
Zoom In - This
tool allows you to zoom in to a specific area by drawing a box on the Map
Window. To use this tool, start by activating the tool by clicking on
it. Next, click, hold and drag a 'zoom box' on the Map Window - you will see a
red border appear that outlines the extent of your new view. Release the
mouse and the view will be adjusted to the new extent. You can also just
click and release on the map to zoom in a fixed amount.
Zoom Out - This
tool allows you to zoom out over a specific area by drawing a box on the Map
Window. To use this tool, start by activating the tool by clicking on
it. Next, click, hold and drag a 'zoom box' on the Map Window - you will see a
red border appear that outlines the extent of your new view. Release the
mouse and the view will zoom out and move the 'zoom box' selection to the center of the map. You can also just
click and release on the map to zoom out a fixed amount.
Pan - Panning allows
you to recenter the view without changing the scale. To pan, start by making
this tool active, then click on the Map Window, and drag you mouse
in the direction you want to re-center the view. Release the mouse and the
Map Window will re-center itself. You can also use the blue arrows
located on the sides of the map to pan North, South, East and West to pan a fixed amount.
Measure Distance -
This tool provides distance in feet from one point to another. Start by making this tool active,
then choose the starting point by holding down the mouse button on a point anywhere on the map, and
then drag the mouse to the ending point. As long as you hold down the mouse, the distance in feet will be
displayed in the bottom left corner of your browser.
Identify -
This tool provides additional information about select layers. Start by clicking on the name of the layer in the Layers tab that you would like
to see more information about. The name should turn blue and '(Identify)' should appear beside it. Then make this tool active
and click in the middle of the feature you are interested in. If there is information related to the selected layer for the object
you selected, it will be displayed in the window that opens, as seen below.
Select - This
tool will allow you to choose a parcel and retrieve the associated
assessor data for that parcel. Start by making this tool active, and then click
on a parcel in the Map Window. The parcel will be outlined in red
and filled with a light red background. The assessor
data will be displayed in the Info tab of the Info Window.

Working with Geographic Layers
A Layer is a group of geographic features
that have a common element. You turn layers on and off using the boxes in
the Layers tab in the Info Window. Checking the box next to the layer will make that layer visible,
while checking the box off removes it from the Map Window. Here is an example:
By checking the 'Parcels (dark outline)' and 'Zoning' layers in the
Layers tab of the Info Window and clicking 'update', these two layers appear immediately in the Map Window.
You can remove layers from the view by unchecking them
and clicking 'update'.
